I really enjoyed the part today where we picked a topic and used the resources that we have been learning about to find specific examples and resources regarding our topic. I feel like too often people (myself included!) rely on simply going to google and typing in what we are curious about, but with these tools there is a plethora of information and useful tools around for educators and administrators to use all the time. I also did not realize that linkedin had actual groups and resources on it as well. I thought the only purpose of it was for connecting with other professionals, and not for researching. What a great resource for multiple platforms!
ReplyDeleteThanks Andy...it's been a GREAT week!
DeleteI think this idea would be great with staff and staff. Just make sure to have a hashtag to share the info!
DeleteI had no idea you could get so much information on the OSPI website. Up until today I had basically only gone so far as the School Report Card, but it's good to know that there is much more information I will have access to as an administrator. I definitely think I will need a refresher course on how to access all of it though because I think I would get lost if I tried again! Maybe there is a way to collaborate and make a "cheat sheet" for the important reports we'd want to be able to look up as principals?
ReplyDeleteAgreed, I usually go straight to the School Report Card but now I know that there is more dense information to be found on the OSPI website.
DeleteI'd be willing to help you with this...it is my passion and expertise.
DeleteYes, what a great resource for learning about schools that you are interviewing for and data as a principal about your current school.
DeleteLove the idea of the cheat sheet!
DeleteI am quite excited to follow the trends in building construction and layouts throughout the coming decades and how they change. In my classroom this past year we almost made tables obsolete, but we needed them for lunch. The kids loved the flexible seating choices in class and that we had different lighting sources. Kids seemed to be more alert when they weren't in their seats. What kind of flexible seating do any of you use currently? If you had 1:world technology in your classroom, how would you want your classroom set up? Would you yourself prefer flexible seating in your current college setting or school staff meeting setting? What are the drawbacks you see with flexible seating?
ReplyDeleteI loved chapter 10 and would love to be part the planning of a new building. I let my kids move around as needed and would love to have a classroom design that would allow for more of that!
DeleteI'm excited to see what happens in your new school!
DeleteI agree with Andy. I am so guilty of only using Google to search for resources. Now I have so many more resources to explore. I also did not realize LinkedIn could be used for information. I thought it was merely for professional networking. Today was a great practice day. I was able to accomplish all of the tasks! I have learned so much this week. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteMe too! I thought LinkedIn was only a place to compile a virtual resume and connect with colleagues. I'm glad to know that there is more to it and I'm going to have to mess around with it to find out more!
DeleteNice work Tiffany! You have much to celebrate! #lifelonglearner
DeleteI have learned so much this week! I am excited to use some of the new learning this week in my internship and in the future as a principal. I have used the data dashboard on OSPI to access information about my school. I now have a note to use this to help me as I approach interviews for other schools and district in 6 months. (Glenn keeps reminding Puyallup we need to be ready in 6 months!)
ReplyDeleteIt’s important to model appropriate use of technology with our students starting in elementary school. How and when do we use our devices (personal and district), how to be responsible with the use of it and the handling of devices. Digital citizenship is essential!
I can't wait to see all of the things you'll do in your internship! I agree with the importance of modeling technology use, it's even cooler that you're making it happen at the elementary level!
DeleteI'm so proud of your work Kathy!
DeleteI really like the chrometab application. What a great time saver when you are doing something specific that involves a lot of different sites. There are so many different sites out there that all have amazing applications! Moving forward, I want to figure out which applications work best for me, and then focus my efforts on mastering those resources.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things Tiffany and I talked about was how hard it would be as an administrator to manage all of the social media for the school. My school has twitter, facebook, instragram, and vine. How do you decide what to post where? If I take a picture do I post it on all of those sites?? This is something I will want to talk to my principal about when school starts again.
I like the way instagram allows you to post to multiple sites with one post. But there's no wrong way to begin.
DeleteToday was fun, I love the resources that OSPI provides for us, I use them regularly. The other interesting part of today was seeking out articles using multiple sites. I can’t wait to use this strategy with our orchestra. I’m hoping to have a blog post at least once a month for our orchestra page. The biggest challenge for me is going to be finding blogs and articles that are engaging and relevant rather than posting for the sake of posting. The achievement index was really cool, I hadn’t seen this before.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of the final standard of ISTE, I’m quite interested in what has worked in creating good digital citizenship. In my classroom we have a very open policy about how phones can be used. My big piece is that students tell me ahead of time that they will be answering a text or phone call. If you were to look at our class, I don’t think there is a person that hasn’t been on their phone at one point of time or another, so why wouldn’t we hold kids to similar standards within a school setting?
I had fun too! Your reflections have been a pleasure to read...You are really internalizing and making practical applications!
DeleteI enjoyed the "pop quiz" today because it forced me to synthesize what I have learned this week. Being able to embed a blog or a link to a post seems simple now but so cool! Also, I super appreciated learning about the tools and reports that can be found on the OSPI website. As I look toward my internship, knowing where these resources are will be vital.
ReplyDeleteErick you've become quite the tech nerd!...and I love it!
DeleteI thought that today was very useful, particularly as we looked at the reports that OSPI produces and how we can use them to inform our practice and our decision making. I also felt that the time we took for a focused search can be applied to our research as a leader when we are looking into a new topic or have a problem we have not faced before. I used the OSPI reports to dig into the levy tax rates for each county and that was interesting to see (using real numbers) the data as to the inequity in education. I also like the idea of using that 'search time' to rejuvenate myself as a principal and 'fill my bucket' once a week. I really believe that if you are excited, enthusiastic, and reaching to better yourself that culture will be infused into the staff you serve. I look forward to continuing to refine the way I search to allow myself to stay current in my profession. I also appreciated the chromebook tab information as I think that could be a useful tool.
ReplyDeleteQuote of the day:
"Two week torture" - Dr. Malone (I appreciate the honesty)
Good use of Quote of the day
DeleteYou have learned so much and you are really taking your learning to the next level! Thanks for actively and authentically engaging in this process!
Deletep.s. the torture will continue next Monday!
DeleteI'm in agreement with the posts so far! I really enjoyed the time to research a problem of practice using the tools we've used so far in class. I too am a Google hound and am so used to searching Google really quick for something that I have never even considered using anything else. Our assistant superintendent just e-mailed and asked for some ideas for the beginning of the year staff motivational tools and I was twittering and searching slideshare for ideas!! Before I just would've googled it!!!
ReplyDeleteExcellent application of your new skills you are learning Ann!
DeleteThe OSPI reports opened my eyes to a lot of tools that I did not know where possible. While I do not use them much, I was unaware of all the different options for the state report card. That would have been EXTREMELY useful while working on some of my projects for past classes. However, I will keep that in my tool bag.
ReplyDeleteComing out of this week, I have a two goals for myself.
Read and stay current with topics in education. Chris Dunn had a great way of putting it. “Refilling our cup with new energy this week.” I think this is a very realistic step that would close a gap in my own professional learning. I think I am going to use Feedly for this resource.
I am very open to any other resources that would help me in this
Create a “shared” atmosphere for all teachers regarding technology. Our school is converting to become a “google” school. We have many teachers that are nervous about this change, so I think this would be a good tool at staff meetings to implement. With that, I am going to come prepared in the first few weeks with a large list of “cool” functions and ideas for teachers to use in their own teaching. Hopefully, this will break down the barrier.
Still, have a lot of new knowledge rolling around in my head and need process the applications of these a little more.
Have a great weekend!
Thanks for the tech support you are providing in Spokane! I love the way you are already broadcasting your goals, the rest of us will help hold you accountable.
DeleteEven though I did not finish the end of the class, I was present for the research portion of it. I was amazed at how many resources I could find so quickly on a single topic. Like many others have stated in their comments, I am guilty of only using google to search for information. However, I find that there are now multiple platforms I should search depending on what information I want. OR I can use multiple platforms to look for multiple forms of information.
ReplyDeleteI did watch the video from class and I was also really interested in the amount of information that OSPI can provide. I stumbled onto some of that by accident today when I was looking at my feedly and found a memo on new BECCA legislation. The link took me to the OSPI page where I found all of these other memos and documents. I have seen state report card before in my class on SIP plans, but it was really good to be reminded that tool is there. I have not played around fully with the ways to display certain testing information and I think that will be really valuable in my role as testing coordinator for my building.
Thank you!
