My name is Glenn Malone, my wife and I celebrated our 34rd wedding anniversary this summer and my 56th birthday. We have 2 grown children with 3 grandchildren, our oldest starting 2nd grade this Fall. We (my wife) own 2 horses, 2 cats & a dog. I have been an educator since 1982 with over 20 years as an elementary principal, including the Pierce County Principal of the year in 2000 and the National Principal of the year in 2010. I am currently an Executive Director in Puyallup and serve as the Coordinator of the WSU South Puget Sound Principal Certification Program. I received my doctorate in 2012 and my dissertation was selected as the Dissertation of the Year. In addition, I volunteer as Past-President of the Washington Educational Research Association (WERA). My connection to technology comes from an extensive background in Educational Technology including my service as a Technology Director. For the last 2 years I've provide Instructional Technology professional development to the Principals on the Island of St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. Enough about me... I'm looking forward to learning more about you!
I am very excited to learn about technology from you. I like to think that I know a thing or two about a thing or two, but when it comes down to it I usually need help with navigating technology. I also love horses and am jealous that you own two! Looking forward to meeting you.
My name is Seanna Pitassi. I teach chemistry at Heritage High School in Vancouver. This is my second year of teaching and I am loving it! I coach JV girls soccer in the fall, and am currently coaching track this spring. I love being able to keep my competitive side alive in my coaching duties. I attended Central Washington University for my undergrad, but otherwise have lived in the Vancouver area most of my life. I have a cat named Avi that I love with all of my heart. I am pursuing my masters to further my education as well as check one thing off of my to do list. I'm looking forward to working with everyone in the class!
Hi Seanna! I agree with Ashley, that is great that you are pursuing your masters already, great job! I also have a cat named Jetty who I adore :) Looking forward to hearing more from you!
Hey Seanna, do you have a favorite soccer team? I have only recently become a soccer fan thanks to the Sounders. I'm glad to be in both classes with you.
My name is Ashley Beck and I teach 4th grade at Salmon Creek Elementary in Vancouver School District. This is my 9th year of teaching, but first year at Salmon Creek and I have loved my transition to this building! I am a transplant to the Vancouver area, as I originally come from Ephrata, WA. I attended WSU-Pullman for my undergrad and received my BA in History and my BA in Elementary Education. I am married and I have a 4-year-old daughter, Avery and a 21-month-old son, Carson who keep me on my toes. I am pursuing my Masters Degree and Administrative Credentials so I can create change at the school level instead of just in my corner of the building!
Hi Ashley! I am also pursuing my Masters and Administrative credentials. I can't imagine doing all of this with two little kids running around! Kudos to you :) That's really great that you are pursuing all of this while in a new building, I am glad to hear that it has been such a great experience, I am looking forward to hearing more about it!
Hi, Ashley. I'm with you on creating change on a bigger level! Have you already had your voice audition? What if you were offered a principal job and a recording contract at the same time...what do you choose??
My name is Andy Breneman, and I am the athletic director and full time math teacher in my middle school. I am currently in the principal program through WSU Spokane and will be finishing in the spring of 2017 (Hopefully) I have three beautiful daughters and a great wife. Fly fishing and coaching basketball are two of my greatest passions, and I do them regularly! I am very excited for this class, as I feel like there will be many applicable benefits that are taken away from the instruction. Nice to meet all of you!
Hi Andy, it is nice to meet you as well! If you are finishing next spring, does that mean you will be doing your internship next year? Were you able to do that at your current school? I'm sure being the athletic director has already prepared you for the leadership role some too! I'll look forward to talking more with you once class begins. Have a great end to your school year!
Ryan Lopez - 3/4 loop teacher. I am in my 12th year of teaching and have setup a paperless classroom with 4th graders this year. I love math and science and the interrelationships in all subjects. I am pursuing my admin certification in hopes of working with technology at a district level. I have much to learn and gain from this class and others. Meg and I have 3 children, Kai, Calla (like the lily), and Maizy. Maizy and Calla are twins. My wife is a kindergarten teacher in the same school district and we have enjoyed many years of the same schedule. I love playing the guitar, working in the yard, and diy projects. I look forward to learning with all of you.
Hey Ryan, I am the "Green Team" guy at our school so I am super excited about your paperless classroom! We were just talking in our PLC this morning about being more intentional with integration of math into our science lessons, maybe I'll have to borrow some ideas from you in the future. My wife is also a teacher and can relate to the benefits of having the same schedule. Are you in the middle of any DIY projects?
Erick, what grade do you teach again? Force and motion, food chains and webs, adaptations, and westward movement have a ton of math involved that I have worked on. I have a ton of science A-Z content I use as well for literacy. We are in the middle of moving. We sold our house, bought a house and will be "homeless" for three weeks until our new house closes. So, the only DIY I have going on is moving. And, our sold house closes June 15th, the day I present I believe.
Hey Ryan, how are all of the DIY projects going this summer? I'm excited to hear about the work you're doing on your place! One of these days we'll have to trade some guitar licks, I'm running low on ideas and would love to hear you play.
Hello everyone! My name is Ali Forsyth. This is the end of my fourth year teaching math at Rogers High School in Spokane. I completed my undergraduate work at WSU in Pullman and would consider myself a 'rabid' Cougar fan! I have taught Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Honors Algebra 2. Next year I will teach the senior bridge to college course along with some regular Algebra 2's. This is the start of my second and last year of my masters and my principal's certification. If it all works out, I will be graduating in Spring of 2017! I don't have a lot of free time, but when I do I enjoy yoga, circus arts and traveling whenever and where ever I can. Currently, I am the cheerleading advisor at Rogers as well as the pole vault coach. I love being involved in all aspects of the education world, especially leadership opportunities. I am pursuing my masters with my principal's certificate to further my own education as well as create change that reaches beyond my classroom. I firmly believe that learning is a life long experience and I am excited to learn from this class and classmates.
Hi Ryan! I do aerial silks mostly but I have performed aerial hoop, doubles hoop and some fire eating too! I am currently not performing with any group right now to finish up my masters :)
Hi. My name is Kathy and I'm finishing up my 18th year in the classroom. I currently teach third grade at North Star Elementary, in the Bethel School District, and will get to stay at my current school for my internship this upcoming school year. I'm super excited and so thankful for this opportunity. My love of travel stems from being a military kid, where we were lucky to live and travel around the world. I spent most of my childhood living in Frankfurt, Germany (1st -8th grade) and then moved to WA when my Dad retired from the military. My family and I still spend a lot of time traveling and enjoy our adventures together. I have an amazing son, Matthew, who just turned 15 and is finishing his first year in HS (9th grade). He also will be starting Driver’s Ed when school gets out in June. My wonderful Hubby, Shaughn, and I will celebrate our third wedding anniversary this August. He has a 22 y/o that lives with us while he goes to college and a 27 y/o daughter who is married and has two beautiful daughters. So, yes, I’m also a Halmoni (Korean Grandma) to Claire and Laurel. I’ve learned so much from the WSU Puyallup Principal Classes and look forward to the continued learning this summer. ☺
Hey Kathy, I love to travel too although I've never been to Germany. I wish you and Matthew the best of luck with Driver's Ed! The thought of one of my kids driving keeps me awake at night...I am super happy that you get to stay at your current school for your internship!
My name is Erick Hoffarth and my wife and I will be celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary in June! We have an artsy 11 year old daughter and an athletic 9 year old son. Both kiddos have been begging me for years to get a dog and I think this summer I am finally going to cave in :) Any dog breed/name suggestions would be gladly welcome. My wife and I were both born and raised in North Dakota and moved here shortly after she graduated college. I received my undergraduate from WSU-Vancouver and had such a positive experience that I decided last fall to pursue my Masters Degree at WSU-Vancouver. I have truly enjoyed the educational leadership journey and am eager learn on the path. When I'm not teaching fifth grade at Eisenhower Elementary, you can probably find me at Home Depot, cooking, or taxiing a kid to an extra-curricular activity.
Erick, I have an artsy 13 year old son and an athletic 11 year old son. I was also a fifth grade teacher for many years - my favorite grade! I also spend my extra time cooking and taxiing kiddos around. I look forward to meeting you in July!
Erick, I am a Home Depot person as well! Usually I like to not think projects through far enough so that I need to go back within the hour for a part I did not anticipate! Are you currently working on any projects?
I'm Ann Tracey. This is my ninth year teaching at South Ridge Elementary in the Ridgefield School District in SW WA. I started in first grade, moved up to second, then fifth, and have finally landed in Kindergarten (my goal since graduating Eastern WA with my BA)! My husband and I love taking our girls (1 and 4) on hikes, to the beach, and camping. We have an extremely friendly lab-pit bull mix named Rocky and an extremely moody tabby cat named Spot (although she is very friendly and patient with the 1 year old). I grew up in Graham, in the Bethel School District so I love being able to communicate and work with the Puyallup Campus folks because of all the nostalgia!
Ann, I have always admired those who can teach primary - specifically kinder. :) I am also taking my family to the beach this summer. What beach are you headed to? Do you have any "must see" suggestions?
You grew up in Graham? What schools did you attend? I enjoyed our PLC and your thoughtful responses. I am excited to have another class with you...if we survive action research! 😃
I am Jim McCollum. I have two awesome boys, Jack who is 3 and Luke who is 1. They keep me very busy. My very understanding wife and I will be celebrating our 10 year anniversary this summer (actually the day class gets out, so it will be a double celebration). Outside of school I enjoy attempting to play golf, playing baseball with my boys, going to cougar sporting events, and spending as much time as possible with my family. I also play a mean game of “nose goes” and air juggling, which I hope will be Olympic events very soon. Can you say 2020 Olympics, Kon’nichiwa! This is my 10th year of teaching and my 9th year at St. Thomas More. My current position is 7th/8th grade science and history teacher, vice principal of student affairs, and jack of all trades. I am starting my second year in the Masters in Educational Leadership and Principal Certification program. I look forward to learning more about the current technology that can impact my students.
Hey Jim, congrats on 10 years! I just got my wife her first set of golf clubs and we are starting to get into it. Have you found any spectacular courses where you're at?
The city course in Spokane are great courses at even better rates. We have some very nice courses in the CDA area, but only play them once a year as a treat. Nice to meet you Hans.
Agreed Chris, I would love to attempt another round.
My name is Tiffany Viall. I am currently an instructional coach and district lead mentor coach in Wenatchee. I have taught fifth through eighth grade in Wenatchee, Federal Way, and Milpitas, CA. I did my undergraduate work at WSU and decided to stay crimson and gray for my graduate work. It has been a bit of a challenge due to the fact that I live in Wenatchee. I am grateful for some on-line and summer courses! I am entering my second year of my administrative internship at John Newbery Elementary. We have an amazing administrative staff and I am lucky to be working and learning from them!
I am celebrating my 20th year anniversary this August with my high school sweetheart. He is also a WSU grad! We have two amazing boys. My 13 year old son plays the piano, guitar, and sings. My tall 11 year old son loves basketball, soccer, football, and reading up on stats from any athlete. I am not sure where he gets his height from..... They make like very fun!
I am looking forward to learning more about technology that will enhance student achievement and learning.
My name is Hans Nelson. I just finished my 4th year running the orchestra programs at Graham-Kapowsin High School and Frontier Middle School. This last year I took our high school orchestras on a trip to Anaheim where we took 2nd place at the Heritage Orchestra Competition! Over the past four years I have been working to build the program to a full-time position at the high school, and I’m happy to say I’m down to two buildings from the five I started at. Outside of school I perform professionally with local jazz groups, pit orchestras, and DJing weddings with my amazing wife Amy. When we aren’t working weddings, Amy and I love spending our time outdoors hiking, boating, or walking our dog, Nora. I’m excited to say we just returned from a two-week trip to Norway, where we got to spend some time on our family’s farm. Highlights included climbing a technically difficult peak called Straumshornet, burning a fake witch on St. Hans’ Day, and kayaking the fjord in Trondheim.
